URGENT TIMES/URGENT ART
Since 1984 Culture Clash has been trying to save the pinche world! Through their art, politics, activism and text. Post modern clowns on a mission to create relevant art for an audience that truly reflects AmeriCCa. The Spanish Classics will have to wait, there is too much going on out there, out there in AmeriCCa and the world and CC is gleefully gathering up the info and reporting it back to their audience as fast as they can. Taking a cue from their hero, the late great August Wilson, Culture Clash now writes in play cycles. They follow the swollen rivers and tributaries of their culture while steering clear of the dummied down and non-threatening Latin Explosion and the greedy, market driven Decade of the Hispanic. Instead, they have embarked on restless journeys that have allowed them to delve deep into the Chicano/Latino experience while continuing to broaden their world view as concerns of the group have blasted beyond the dead end streets of identity politics. Sitcom's come and go, Hispanic celebrity culture comes and goes, politicians come and go. Theater, however, is an ancient art suited for these modern and uncertain times. They have criss-crossed the country more times than they can remember; they danced with death, drank with drunkards, out-smarted cops, got run out of town by the religious right (Kansas State University) and walked the Border Fence on both sides. They make Culture not war! They Clash and are never complacent!
Art and politics forever homes. Orale.
